How many mattress blogs have you read today? How many have you ready in your lifetime? Unless you are a mattress nerd like me, it is probably none. Take a few minutes to humor me and read this one.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I never thought that in my mid forties I would completely change the course of my professional life and open a mattress store; much less a 2nd one in my early fifties. A little over 7 years ago, I told my wife that I was going to quit my job as the director of leasing in commercial real estate and pull money from our savings to open a mattress store. On top of that, I had no idea when I would collect a paycheck. I assured her that it would be fine. She trusted me, and we prayed about it. I knew nothing about mattresses, but I knew how to sell, and I knew that people sleep. The best salespeople don’t sell to people, they figure out what their customer needs and do their best to make sure to provide that for them. Learn about your product, learn the features of the product and how it benefits your customers. Make sure they get what they need. It’s that simple. I am no longer a salesman; I am a business owner. When you have skin in the game it matters more, and the customer knows it. This is 100% how I do business. In 7 years of business, I have gone from providing products that sales reps told me I needed to be successful, to building a partnership with vendors that I trust, and making sure that I know everything I can about that product. Every item I provide has a specific customer in mind. I can’t be all things to all people, but I can get close. I also spend time with my vendors to make sure that we get the best product for your dollar. For the last month, I have spent days working with Southerland to make sure we have the best items in their lineup to be successful. By doing that, I have also been able to cut prices on over ½ of the styles we carry. Saving money makes everyone happy. Our success relies on happy customers.
I am going back to the original question; why I should read a mattress blog. Always remember a few things, we are a mattress store, so we always have a sale, we offer same as cash financing, we deliver, and we think our product is the best. The one thing that makes us different is that you matter to me. I want your business, but more than anything else, I want your trust.
Oh yeah, the other reason to read this is to know that we are having a no tax sale Labor Day weekend, Thursday-Saturday. We will be closed on Labor Day.
